There is a lot of noise around the world about what a brand is and that well, confuses people. So let's leave the definition of a brand for the next design conference, and let's focus on you. Who are you? What defines you and what are you all about?
Self Recognition To Retention
Believe me when I say, it’s time to be self-obsessed. Because that's what it is all about, your vibe, your panache, what makes you stand out and what makes you feel safe and confident in yourself. Forget the logos, forget the colors, go with comic sans if that's what you are and then change back to Helvetica if needed.
You see, in a meeting, I am going to connect with you, your team members are going to connect with you, your audience is going to connect with you and the extensions of you, and that recognition created through authentic consistently is what a brand is all about and what others will gravitate toward.
Building a brand starts with self-discovery. Take the time to reflect on your core identity and values. What makes you tick? What are your passions and beliefs? By aligning your brand with your personal convictions, you infuse it with a genuine sense of purpose. Remember, building a brand is not just about logos and colors; it's about expressing your inner drive and passions in a way that resonates with others. Consistency in embodying your core values across various formats is the key to authenticity.
A brand is not the gut feeling, no that's the aftermath, a brand is your core, your purpose, and your personality amplifying you, especially when you are the most consistent authentically and with fulfilment, because when that happens, your brand is activated, communicated, and your audience is truly captivated.
So while it's a long game, a brand is not your cookie cutter frame, that's you being someone else's brand, the one that stood out when people lacked clarity, but we aren’t in the same world and you aren’t cookie dough.
It’s not about being different, it's about being you.
Branding isn’t about being different, it's definitely not about being better, being different is better, but that different person shouldn’t be someone you aren’t.
If you feel confident in a 3 piece suit even at a coffee shop, or in 3-4ths to a global networking meeting, if that makes you feel your best self if that makes you feel confident, then that's you, that's your true self, not you because someone else is doing it, even if someone else is, but because it is true to you and you can bring your best self to the conversation.
Remember This Scene from Iron Man?
Tony didn’t paint his suit red to Stand Out or To be hidden, he made it because it vibed with him, and made him feel like himself, it brought a sense of ownership to the task and a lot of his personality. Making it more easier for him to be his best self. The color scheme was him.
So focus on building ownership of yourself instead of being someone else.
Break Status, Breed Trust.
Authenticity and trust go hand in hand. When you embrace your true self and communicate openly and honestly, you build a solid foundation of trust with your team members and clients. Genuine connections are forged through authentic interactions, fostering a sense of belonging and loyalty. Take inspiration from successful brands that have prioritized authenticity and transparency, creating lasting bonds with their stakeholders.
Break free from the shackles of conventional branding. Don't be afraid to challenge the status quo and embrace your unique style, even if your new intern says that “It’s the trend, mannn!”. Experiment with unconventional elements, such as fonts, colors, and visuals, that align with your authentic self.
If Comic Sans truly represents who you are, then go for it! Remember, authenticity is about being true to yourself, even if it means going against the grain. Adapt when necessary, but always stay true to your core identity.
Darling, you are a star!
So now its time to start gravitating your audience! Authenticity and trust go hand in hand. When you embrace your true self and communicate openly and honestly, you build a solid foundation of trust with your team members and clients. Genuine connections are forged through authentic interactions, fostering a sense of belonging and loyalty.
The more consistent and authentic you are, the more easier it is for you to be confident in yourself and express yourself. And now you get recognized for it, for yourself, you stand out for yourself not because you are breaking trends but because your raising yourself on top!
In a world where conformity often dominates, building an authentic brand that gravitates can set you apart. By embracing your true self, defining your core values, and expressing them consistently, you can cultivate a brand that resonates deeply with your audience. Remember, it's cooler to be yourself.
So, let your unique vibe shine, and watch as investors, clients, and team members gravitate toward the authentic presence you create.
